Indian cuisine is a blend of diverse cultures, flavours, and ingredients, making it one of the world’s most unique and delicious cuisines. The spices, herbs, and condiments used in Indian food add flavour to the dishes and have several health benefits. India has a rich culinary tradition, and each region has its specialities and cooking techniques that will tantalize your taste buds.

You will find the best Chole Bhature, Rajma Chawal, Naan bread and Paneer curry in Delhi and Punjab, and no one can beat Rajasthan in making Daal Baati Churma. OMG! While writing this, I am drooling over my thoughts. The crux is that Indian food has so much to offer, and one can yearn for it after coming abroad. However, the good news is you will find all these varieties in London.

London has become the home to a diverse range of Indian restaurants that serve some of the most authentic and delicious food outside of India. Many Indian restaurants in London are run by chefs who have honed their skills in some of the best kitchens in India and bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge of traditional Indian cooking. You can choose from high-end restaurants that offer a fine dining experience to casual eateries that serve street food and quick bites.

Today, I will be discussing mainly North Indian food, but I will surely expand to other regional cuisines, in further blogs.

Best Restaurants to Eat North Indian Food in London

I am not a connoisseur of North Indian food, but my taste buds quickly sense it when the taste isn’t authentic because I expect the dishes to have a similar taste and texture. That’s why I recommend these six best restaurants, ranging from lavish dine-in to little reasonable ones. They all serve tasty and spicy food, but you can always ask them to keep it mild if the high spice level doesn’t go well with your metabolism.

Madhu’s of Mayfair

Madhu’s is a luxurious dining restaurant located in an affluent area of London, also known as one of the most expensive districts in the world. So, it is fair for the restaurant to have extravagant prices, but it offers a magnificent ambience and service, making it a perfect place to go for special occasions. They have branches in South Hall and other parts of London too.

Madhu’s has been in this business for 40 years and originated from Kenya, due to which you may find a Kenyan twist in some of their Indian recipes. The restaurant was started by two siblings, Sanjeev and Sanjay Anand.

Madhu’s of Mayfair has recently been added to my list. I went there for my birthday dinner planned by Mr Hubby. The best part was that since they knew about the occasion, they gave us a special table decorated with rose petals, candles and a lamp. The staff served us well, and after we finished our food, they surprised us with a mini cake and also sang a Happy Birthday song to me.

From their menu, we ordered vegetarian options, which included Chilli Paneer for starters and, in mains, Karahi Paneer, 2 Garlic Naan, 1 Tandoori Roti and Cucumber and Carrot Raita. The food was delicious, and the quantity was accurate for two people. Overall, we had a lovely evening there.

The cost of dining at this restaurant will be approximately £40-50 per person. Visit Madhu’s website to know more.

Veeraswamy

Veeraswamy has a Michelin Star and is known as the UK’s oldest restaurant. It is situated on Regent Street, another prime location in London. The restaurant began in 1926 by Edward Palmer, a retired British Indian Army officer. In its early years, Veeraswamy used to serve Anglo-Indian cuisine, but lately, it has been serving authentic Indian food due to its high popularity.

Veeraswamy is a lavish dining place; their food and ambience are fabulous. The interiors of the restaurant give a grandeur vibe through the silver-clad ceilings and Venetian-style chandeliers. They have a comprehensive menu of classical Indian and exotic creations.

The cost per person is around £55. However, I think they need to increase the quantity of food in proportion to the price.

Visit Veeraswamy’s website to know more or make a reservation.

Caraway

Caraway, Gants Hill is one of the initial restaurants where we had authentic Indian food in London. The restaurant is named after a condiment. It has a lovely ambience and costs around £60-70 for three to four people, including starters and mains. Caraway provides a fusion of Indian and other cuisines in some recipes. I recommend Veg Manchurian (gravy or dry), Garlic Mushrooms and Paneer Tikka Masala from their menu. Visit Caraway’s website for more details.

Indian Aroma

Indian Aroma is an award-winning restaurant located in Gants Hill. Their menu comprises both North Indian and South Indian cuisines. They also provide catering services for various events.

I would recommend Vegetable Biryani, Paneer Dilkush Tikka, Schezwan Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken Tikka Biryani, Methu Vadai, Masala Dosa, Gobi 65, and Egg Kothu Parotta from their menu. The quantity of food is excellent, and cost-wise, they are reasonable for dining in. Check out Indian Aroma website for more details.

Flavours of India

While returning from Hyde Park with friends, my husband and I noticed this restaurant and just walked in because we all were famished. Initially, we were sceptical about the taste of food and hygiene due to their low ratings on Google that we checked online and the congested seating arrangement. However, we had no other option apart from giving it a go. And I have no shame in accepting that we were so wrong! Everything we ordered on our table tasted nice, ranging from starters and drinks to mains, and the prices were also reasonable as per the location. It had cost us between £60-70 for four adults and a kid.

Flavours of India is located in Paddington; its other branch is in Hounslow. They opened their first restaurant in London in 2006. Visit their website to book a table.

Chokhi Dhani

Chokhi Dhani is a premium fine-dine restaurant coupled with the warmth of appeasing hospitality. It is listed as one of the top ten restaurants in London. Chokhi Dhani is an established brand in India due to its innovative theme, which displays ethnic village life.

I discovered Chokhi Dhani when I was planning to go to the Battersea Lights Festival in Chelsea, which happens during the Chinese New Year. So, I reserved this place to have dinner with my friends after I had visited the festival.

The restaurant serves traditional Rajasthani food like Dal Baati Churma, which is one of the North Indian cuisines. It also serves Maharaja Thali with four to five curries, flatbread, rice, pickles, and a dessert, which is a must-try. Visit Chokhi Dhani website to make a reservation directly or else you can do it through OpenTable.
