Don’t Make These Nine Mistakes When Travelling to London for the First Time

Hello, dear readers! London is a high-spirited city with history, culture, greenery, and unique attractions. It’s the capital city of the United Kingdom, perching on the Thames River, and one of the oldest cities in the world with a history of 2000 years. London has a different vibe from the rest of the country, and it’s considered one of the significant centres of business, banking, royal culture and fashion.

So, if you’re planning your first trip to London, you must be aware of these unavoidable mistakes you tend to make as a first-time visitor. In addition, I will be sharing valuable tips for you to consider. Let’s begin!

  1. Underestimating the Weather
  2. Ignoring the British Etiquette
  3. Overburdening Your Itinerary
  4. Forgetting to Explore Beyond the Main Tourist Spots
  5. Not Protecting Yourself from Pickpocketing
  6. Not Using the Public Transport
  7. Not taking advantage of Free Activities in London
  8. Not Downloading the Offline Map
  9. Not Making Reservations for Activities and Restaurants

Underestimating the Weather

London’s weather can be unpredictable, and as a first-time visitor, you may not check the forecast and prepare for rain or chilly temperatures. To ensure you’re always ready, I strongly recommend carrying an umbrella and jacket in London, depending on the season. For instance, a light rain jacket will work during summer, but you will need extra layers during autumn and spring. This way, you’ll feel prepared and secure, regardless of the weather.

Ignoring the British Etiquette

Londoners value politeness. Simple gestures like saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ or waiting in line can make a big difference in how you’re perceived. Also, remember to keep to your right when using escalators in train stations and malls. These small acts of courtesy show respect for the local culture and enhance your experience in London.

Being mindful of local customs enhances your experience and shows respect and consideration for the local culture.

Overburdening Your Itinerary

It’s tempting to want to see everything. Still, London is vast, and cramming too many attractions into one day can lead to exhaustion.

If you prioritise your must-see spots based on your interests, I assure you that you will not miss out on the things that matter most to you. This approach also leaves room for relaxation and spontaneous exploration, making your trip more enjoyable and less stressful.

Recently, a friend came to London for a week and asked my suggestions while preparing her itinerary. I recommended she prepare her itinerary in the following way: Let’s say she wanted to spend time in nature, so I gave her the list of parks where she could soak in the sun, enjoy picnicking, cycling or sleep under a tree to rejuvenate and heal. She also went to see the famous attractions but didn’t try to cover all of them in one go, and that’s how a vacation fulfils the purpose of travelling.

Forgetting to Explore Beyond the Main Tourist Spots

While iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge, Big Ben, and the London Eye are must-sees, take notice of the charm of local neighbourhoods, markets, and royal gardens. Exploring areas like Notting Hill, Richmond, Hampstead, and Regent’s Canal can give you an authentic London experience.

Not Protecting Yourself from Pickpocketing

Whether you are in London or travelling across the UK and Europe, using an anti-theft cross-body bag can be a lifesaver. It keeps essentials like your phone, credit cards, and local travel cards like Oyster secure and easily accessible.

If you carry a backpack or keep these things in your pocket, there is a higher chance of losing them or becoming a target for pickpockets. A cross-body bag is a practical and safe choice for your travels.

Not Using the Public Transport

Public transport in London is well-organised, comfortable and affordable, so there is no reason that you avoid public transport and use private cabs to go everywhere. It would be best to use a cab mostly late at night for safety or at places where public transport isn’t accessible.

Tip: Use Google Maps and the TFL Oyster app to check the route to any place. You can download the TFL app from Google Play Store or Apple Store.

Not taking advantage of Free Activities in London

London has plenty of free things to do, which include visiting world-class museums like the British Museum and the National Gallery, exploring beautiful parks like Hyde Park and Regent’s Park, capturing pictures of well-known landmarks like Tower Bridge and Big Ben, and much more. Including these free activities in your itinerary can save you a lot of money.

Not Downloading the Offline Map

Your internet may not work in some places even if you have a local sim card or an international plan on your sim. So, I suggest downloading the London route map from Google Maps so that it remains accessible to you if there is a network problem, or Wi-Fi is unavailable.

Not Making Reservations for Activities and Restaurants

Making this mistake can lead to long waits or even being turned away, especially at popular attractions, theatres, and trendy dining spots. London’s top restaurants and experiences often book up weeks in advance, meaning you might miss out on intriguing dining experiences, shows, or special events. While spontaneity can be fun, planning ahead ensures you make the most of your time without having to scramble for last-minute availability.
